Estimate only. Thresholds are held at 2026/27 levels (Plan 2 is frozen until April 2030 and Plan 5 and postgraduate thresholds are fixed); other plan thresholds usually rise each April, which would lower repayments slightly. Interest is applied once a year in this model.

Frequently asked questions

What are the student loan repayment thresholds for 2026/27?

Plan 1: £26,900. Plan 2: £29,385. Plan 4 (Scotland): £33,795. Plan 5: £25,000. Postgraduate: £21,000. You repay 9% of income above the threshold (6% for postgraduate loans).

When is my student loan written off?

Plan 1 loans are usually written off 25 years after the April you were first due to repay (or at 65 for older loans). Plan 2 and Plan 4 loans are written off after 30 years, Plan 5 after 40 years and postgraduate loans after 30 years.

What interest is charged on student loans?

From 1 September 2026, Plan 1, 4 and 5 loans charge 4.1%. Plan 2 charges between 4.1% and 6% depending on income (capped at 6%), and postgraduate loans are capped at 6%. Rates can change during the year.

Should I overpay my student loan?

Only if you expect to clear it before write-off. Many Plan 2 and Plan 5 borrowers will never repay in full, so extra payments may simply be money they did not need to pay.
