How council tax is calculated
Each council sets a Band D charge every year. That figure includes the council's own charge plus precepts for police, fire, adult social care and, in some areas, parish or town councils. Every other band pays a fixed fraction of Band D. In England, Band A pays 6/9 and Band H pays 18/9 (double Band D). Discounts are then taken off the total.
Frequently asked questions

Can I pay council tax over 12 months?
Yes. Bills are normally split into 10 monthly instalments from April to January, but you have the right to ask your council for 12 instalments instead.
