How to improve your CIBIL score: 10 proven tips

There's no instant trick, but most people see real improvement within a few months by following these habits. Start by checking your current report so you know what to fix.

10 ways to raise your score

  1. Pay every EMI and credit card bill on time. Payment history matters more than anything else. Set up auto-debit.
  2. Pay the full credit card bill, not just the minimum due.
  3. Keep credit card usage below 30% of your limit. For example, spend under ₹30,000 a month on a ₹1 lakh limit.
  4. Don't apply for many loans or cards in a short time. Each application adds a hard enquiry.
  5. Keep your oldest credit card open. A longer credit history helps your score.
  6. Have a healthy mix of secured loans (home, car, gold) and unsecured credit (cards, personal loans).
  7. Check your report from all four bureaus and dispute any errors.
  8. Avoid 'settling' a loan if you can. Paying in full and getting it marked 'Closed' is much better.
  9. Be careful about co-signing or becoming a guarantor. Their missed payments will show on your report too.
  10. No credit history? Start with a secured credit card against a fixed deposit and use it lightly.

How long does it take?

Since July 2026, lenders report data to the bureaus weekly, so changes such as lower card balances can show up within a week or two. Recovering from serious problems like a write-off or many missed payments usually takes 6 to 12 months or more of clean repayment.

Frequently asked questions

Can I increase my CIBIL score in 30 days?

Small gains are possible, for example by paying down card balances so you use less of your limit. Big jumps after defaults take months of on-time payments.

Does closing a credit card improve my score?

Usually not. Closing a card lowers your total limit and can shorten your credit history, which may reduce your score. Keep old cards that have no annual fee open.

Will a loan rejection lower my score?

The rejection itself is not reported. But the hard enquiry from the application is recorded, and many enquiries close together can lower your score.
