How your paycheck is calculated
Your employer starts with gross pay and takes out pre-tax deductions such as a traditional 401(k), health insurance and HSA contributions. Federal income tax is worked out on what is left after the standard deduction, using the brackets above. FICA adds 6.2% Social Security (up to the $184,500 wage base) and 1.45% Medicare. Then state income tax is taken, if your state has one. The Child Tax Credit ($2,200 per qualifying child in 2026) reduces federal tax directly.
Frequently asked questions
What is the standard deduction for 2026?
$16,100 for single filers and married filing separately, $32,200 for married couples filing jointly and $24,150 for heads of household.
How much is FICA tax in 2026?
Employees pay 6.2% Social Security tax on wages up to $184,500 and 1.45% Medicare tax on all wages. An extra 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax applies to wages over $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (married filing jointly).
Which states have no income tax?
Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming do not tax wages. Washington taxes some capital gains and New Hampshire no longer taxes interest and dividends.
Does a 401(k) reduce my taxes?
Traditional 401(k) contributions come out before federal (and most state) income tax, which lowers your taxable income. They do not reduce Social Security or Medicare tax. The 2026 employee limit is $24,500.
