CIBIL report: download, understand and fix errors
Your CIBIL report (also called a Credit Information Report or CIR) is the full record behind your score. Lenders read it line by line, so it's worth understanding what each part means and checking it for mistakes.
How to download your CIBIL report free
Request your free annual report on the official TransUnion CIBIL site. After verifying with OTP, you can view and download the full report from your dashboard.
Sections of a CIBIL report
- CIBIL score: your 3-digit score (300–900) at the top.
- Personal information: name, date of birth, gender and ID numbers such as PAN.
- Contact information: addresses and phone numbers reported by your lenders.
- Employment information: occupation and income details, if reported.
- Account information: every loan and credit card, with lender, amount, current balance, overdue amount and month-by-month payment history.
- Enquiry information: each time a lender checked your report because you applied for credit.
Key terms you'll see
- DPD (Days Past Due): how late a payment was each month. '000' or 'STD' means paid on time. Any other number means a late payment.
- SMA, SUB, DBT, LSS: lender classifications for accounts that are overdue or in trouble. These hurt your score.
- Written off: the lender has given up trying to recover the dues. This is very negative.
- Settled: you paid less than the full amount owed to close the loan. This is better than written off, but lenders still see it as negative.
- Closed: the loan was fully repaid. This is the status you want.
- XXX: no information was reported for that month.
Common errors to look for
- A loan or card you never took (possible identity fraud)
- A loan you fully repaid still showing as active or with dues
- Late payments you know you made on time
- Wrong personal details, such as a misspelt name or wrong date of birth
- Duplicate accounts
How to correct mistakes (raise a dispute)
- Log in to the bureau's website where you found the error and open the 'Raise a dispute' section.
- Select the account or detail that is wrong and explain the correction. Keep proof ready, such as a no-dues certificate or bank statements.
- The bureau checks with your lender. Under RBI's 2023 framework, complaints must be resolved within 30 days, or the bureau and lender must pay you ₹100 per day of delay.
- If the issue isn't resolved, you can file a complaint with the RBI through its Complaint Management System (cms.rbi.org.in).
Also tell your lender directly. The lender is the one who reports data to the bureau, so the fix has to come from them.
Frequently asked questions
Is the CIBIL report the same as the CIBIL score?
No. The score is a single number. The report is the full record of your loans, cards, payment history and enquiries that the score is calculated from.
How long do negative entries stay on my report?
Payment history is generally shown for several years. Its effect on your score fades as you build a record of on-time payments after it.
Can a settled account be changed to closed?
Yes, if you pay the remaining amount the lender waived. Ask the lender to update the status to 'Closed' and to report it to the bureaus. Then check your report to confirm.
