Frequently asked questions

What is the HELP repayment threshold for 2026–27?

$69,528. You repay 15 cents for each dollar of repayment income above $69,528 up to $129,717, then $9,028 plus 17 cents per dollar up to $186,050. Above that you repay 10% of your total repayment income.

What changed with HECS repayments?

From 2025–26 repayments are worked out only on income above the threshold (a marginal system), instead of a percentage of your whole income. This means most people repay less each year than under the old system.

Is HELP debt indexed?

Yes. Outstanding balances are indexed each 1 June by the lower of CPI or the Wage Price Index. Balances were also cut by 20% on 1 June 2025.

Can I make voluntary HELP repayments?

Yes, any time through myGov or BPAY. Voluntary payments made before 1 June reduce the balance before indexation is applied.
